Spanish police have arrested a man described as a senior figure in the Hutch organised crime group on the island of Lanzarote. The arrest was carried out by the Spanish National Police's Central UDYCO unit, which investigates serious organised crime.
Footage released by Spanish authorities shows the man being led away in handcuffs by plainclothes officers. He was detained on an international arrest warrant issued by Ireland, where he is wanted in connection with serious criminal offences.
The arrested man has stated through his legal representatives that he will fight the extradition process to Ireland. Extradition proceedings are now expected to begin through the Spanish judicial system.
The Hutch gang, based primarily in Dublin, has been involved in a long-running and violent feud with the rival Kinahan cartel, resulting in numerous murders. International law enforcement agencies, including Europol, have been targeting the finances and operations of both groups.
