Algeria has officially rejected United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which was adopted on October 30, 2023. The resolution calls for a political solution to the Western Sahara conflict and extends the mandate of the UN mission MINURSO until October 31, 2024.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on November 1, 2023, expressing its rejection of the resolution, citing concerns over its content and the process leading to its adoption. Algeria has historically supported the Polisario Front's claim for independence in Western Sahara.
Resolution 2797 was adopted with 13 votes in favor, and two abstentions from Mozambique and Russia. It reaffirms the UN's commitment to a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution based on compromise.
Morocco, which controls most of Western Sahara, has proposed an autonomy plan under its sovereignty, while the Polisario Front demands a referendum on self-determination. The conflict remains unresolved.
