Algerian authorities have launched a nationwide campaign to identify and cover open and abandoned wells. The initiative, announced by the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities, and National Planning, aims to prevent accidents and comes in the wake of a tragic incident in neighboring Morocco.
The campaign was reportedly prompted by the death of a young boy in Morocco. In early February 2026, 5-year-old Rayan Aourram fell into a deep well in the village of Ighran, near Chefchaouen. The multi-day rescue operation to retrieve him captivated global attention, but he was ultimately found dead.
Algerian officials stated the operation is a preventative safety measure. Teams are tasked with locating all unsecured wells across the country's territory, particularly in remote areas, and taking steps to seal them or install protective barriers.
The ministry emphasized that the campaign is part of ongoing efforts to enhance civil protection and public safety. The tragic event in Morocco has highlighted a common regional hazard, leading to renewed focus on infrastructure safety.
