Philippine tennis star Alex Eala has expressed optimism about the potential impact of hosting a Women's Tennis Association (WTA) 250 tournament in Manila. In recent interviews, Eala stated that such an event could significantly boost the sport's profile in the country and inspire young athletes.
The Manila WTA 250 event is scheduled to take place from September 21 to 27, 2026, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Forum Tent. This marks the first WTA tournament to be held in the Philippines in over a decade, with the last being the Manila Challenger in 2015.
Eala, currently the highest-ranked Filipino player on the WTA Tour, emphasized that seeing top international players compete locally could provide a crucial motivational boost for aspiring Filipino tennis players. She highlighted the importance of having accessible role models and competitive benchmarks for the sport's development.
The tournament is expected to feature a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw, offering valuable ranking points and a prize pool. Organizers and local tennis officials hope the event will catalyze greater investment in tennis infrastructure and youth programs across the archipelago.
