Minority Leader in Ghana's Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reaffirmed the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) commitment to rebuilding and strengthening its base as it prepares for life in opposition. This follows a high-level engagement with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on May 23, 2026.
During the meeting, Afenyo-Markin discussed the NPP's post-election strategy and sought the Asantehene's counsel on national unity and development. The visit underscores the party's efforts to regroup after the 2024 general elections, which saw the NPP lose power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a respected traditional ruler, emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Ghana's political landscape. He urged the NPP to focus on constructive opposition and contribute to national development.
The meeting was part of a series of consultations by the NPP leadership to engage stakeholders and rebuild the party's structures ahead of the 2028 elections. Afenyo-Markin was accompanied by other NPP MPs and party officials.
