The African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced a €100 million investment in Morocco's first electric vehicle (EV) battery gigafactory, located in Tangier. The facility, operated by Gotion High-Tech, aims to produce lithium-ion batteries for the growing EV market in Africa and Europe.
This investment is part of the AfDB's broader strategy to support green mobility and sustainable energy in Africa. The gigafactory is expected to create thousands of jobs and reduce the continent's reliance on imported batteries, aligning with Morocco's goal to become a regional automotive hub.
Construction is underway, with production slated to begin in 2027. The project also includes plans for a research and development center to advance battery technology locally.
