The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a €100 million loan to Gotion Power Morocco, a subsidiary of Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech, to build a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery factory in Morocco. The announcement was made on July 28, 2026, according to an AfDB statement.
The facility, located in the Kenitra industrial zone, will have an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of LFP batteries, primarily for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The project is expected to create approximately 2,500 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs, boosting Morocco's position as a regional automotive hub.
The loan, provided under the AfDB's Industrialization and Economic Diversification program, aims to support Morocco's green energy transition and reduce carbon emissions. The plant is slated to begin operations in 2028, with production targeting both local and export markets, including Europe and Africa.
