The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will expand from 24 to 28 teams starting with the 2027 edition. The decision was announced following a CAF Executive Committee meeting.
Under the new format, the 28 qualified teams will be divided into eight groups: four groups of four teams and four groups of three teams. The top two teams from each group will advance to a round of 16, followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final.
The expansion aims to increase representation and competitiveness across African football. The 2027 AFCON is scheduled to be hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, marking the first time three nations will co-host the tournament.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe stated that the change will provide more opportunities for African nations to compete at the highest level. The new format also includes adjustments to the qualifying process, with more slots available for teams from each region.
