Tolkan's death was confirmed by his family. He passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, in Saranac Lake, New York.

He was best known for playing Principal Mr. Strickland in the "Back to the Future" trilogy, famously deriding the film's protagonist as a "slacker." He also portrayed the no-nonsense commanding officer, Stinger, to Tom Cruise's character in the 1986 blockbuster "Top Gun."

His career spanned decades with numerous film and television credits, often playing tough-talking officials, detectives, or military men. His distinctive bald head and intense demeanor made him a memorable screen presence.
