ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, has formally written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging him to initiate the constitutional process for appointing a new chief election commissioner (CEC) and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The letter, dated August 10, 2026, was confirmed by Achakzai's office.
The move comes as the tenure of the current CEC, Sikandar Sultan Raja, is set to expire on January 26, 2027, according to official records. Under Article 213 of the Constitution, the prime minister and the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly are required to agree on a name for the CEC. If they fail to reach a consensus, the matter is referred to a parliamentary committee.
Achakzai's letter emphasizes the need for timely action to avoid a constitutional vacuum. He has proposed that the process begin immediately, suggesting that consultations should be held in accordance with the law. The prime minister's office has not yet issued a public response, but sources indicate that the matter is under consideration.
Political analysts note that the appointment is crucial for the credibility of the next general elections, which are expected to be held in 2028. The ECP has faced criticism in the past over transparency, and a smooth transition is seen as vital for democratic stability.
