The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won a confidence motion in the 117-member Punjab Assembly on Friday, May 1, 2026, with a clear majority. The motion was moved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and passed with 94 votes in favor, while 16 MLAs from the Congress party, one from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and three from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) voted against it. Two MLAs were absent or did not vote.
The confidence motion was necessitated after recent political developments, including the defection of some AAP MLAs to other parties, which raised questions about the stability of the government. However, the AAP leadership asserted that it still commanded a comfortable majority in the house.
During the debate, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accused the opposition of attempting to destabilize the government through unethical means, while Congress and SAD leaders criticized the AAP government's performance on law and order and economic issues. The motion was passed after a six-hour debate.
This victory reinforces AAP's position in Punjab, where it has been in power since the 2022 assembly elections. The party currently holds 94 seats in the assembly, well above the majority mark of 59.
