The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the dates for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 27 to July 25, 2027, marking the first time the competition will be held in East Africa since 1976.
The decision to award the hosting rights to the three East African nations was made in September 2023, as part of CAF's efforts to expand the tournament's reach across the continent. The joint bid, known as the 'East Africa Pamoja' bid, was selected over other contenders, including Algeria and Egypt.
Preparations are underway across the three countries, with stadium renovations and infrastructure upgrades being prioritized. Key venues include the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, Kenya; the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; and the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda. CAF has emphasized the need for timely completion of these facilities to meet international standards.
The 2027 AFCON will feature 24 teams, following the expanded format introduced in 2019. The tournament is expected to boost tourism and economic activity in the region, while also showcasing East Africa's growing football potential. CAF President Patrice Motsepe has expressed confidence in the hosts' ability to deliver a successful event.
