Among the most famous is Dr Pepper, a carbonated soft drink invented in Waco in 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton. The Corny Dog, a hot dog on a stick dipped in cornmeal batter and deep-fried, was first served at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas in 1942. The snack chip Fritos were created in 1932 by San Antonio entrepreneur Elmer Doolin, who purchased a recipe for fried corn chips.
Other notable Texas-born items include the frozen margarita machine, invented in Dallas in 1971 by Mariano Martinez, and the chili con carne served without beans, which was popularized in San Antonio in the late 19th century. The state's influence extends to fast food, with the first Whataburger opening in Corpus Christi in 1950.
