The United States has officially announced the formation of a multinational maritime coalition, named Operation Prosperity Guardian, focused on protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters. The initiative, led by the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet and based in Bahrain, aims to ensure freedom of navigation through this critical chokepoint, which sees about one-fifth of the world's oil supply pass through it.

The coalition's formation follows a series of attacks and seizures of commercial vessels in the region, which the U.S. and its allies have attributed to Iran. The U.S. Department of Defense stated the mission is defensive in nature, involving coordinated patrols and intelligence sharing to deter threats and respond to incidents.

According to Pentagon statements, several allied nations have agreed to participate by contributing ships, aircraft, or personnel. Publicly confirmed participants include the United Kingdom and Bahrain, with other nations participating in an unnamed capacity due to regional sensitivities. The operation operates independently but in coordination with the existing Combined Maritime Forces in the region.

Iranian officials have repeatedly condemned the presence of foreign naval forces in the Persian Gulf, stating that regional countries are capable of securing the waterways themselves. The establishment of this coalition marks a significant, ongoing U.S.-led security effort in one of the world's most strategically important maritime regions.
