Palestine Square in central Tehran, a location long used for prominent anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian displays, has undergone a formal name change. According to Iranian state media and municipal announcements from late 2025, the square has been renamed 'Al-Quds Square' as part of a broader urban redevelopment project. Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.
The square had gained international attention in preceding years for hosting large banners with messages often critical of Israel, some written in Hebrew. These displays were frequently tied to annual events like Quds Day, an Iranian-initiated day of protest in support of Palestinians.
Official reports cite urban planning and traffic flow improvements as the primary reasons for the square's redesign and renaming. The change coincides with ongoing regional tensions, though authorities have not directly linked the two. The new Al-Quds Square features redesigned pedestrian areas and reduced vehicular access.
Analysts note that while the physical space has been altered, the symbolic association with the Palestinian cause remains embedded in the new name. The site is expected to continue serving as a gathering point for state-sanctioned rallies related to the issue.
