A new report from Profmed, a medical aid scheme for graduate professionals, indicates that stress has become a chronic condition for its members in South Africa. The Profmed 2025 Stress Index, based on a survey of 4,000 members, found that professionals now experience stress as a persistent reality rather than isolated incidents.

The index, which measures stress levels across various professional sectors, highlighted that financial pressures, workload, and economic uncertainty are primary drivers. Profmed CEO Craig Comrie stated that the findings show a significant shift from acute stress events to a state of constant, low-grade pressure affecting mental and physical health.

Health experts cited in the report warn that this sustained stress exposure increases the risk of burnout, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic illnesses. The data underscores a growing public health concern within the country's professional workforce, calling for greater awareness and employer intervention to manage workplace well-being.
