Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has stated the government is prepared to intervene to support households with energy bills if costs surge significantly. He made the comments during an interview on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, broadcast on March 15, 2026.
Miliband said, "if it's necessary to intervene, we will," when asked about potential impacts on energy prices from global instability, including conflicts. He emphasized the government's focus on protecting consumers from volatile international markets.
The Energy Secretary highlighted existing policies, such as the ongoing windfall tax on oil and gas companies, as tools to fund potential future support. He did not announce any new immediate measures but confirmed the option remains on the table.
Ofgem, the energy regulator, is set to announce the new price cap level for the period beginning April 1, 2026, later this week. Analysts suggest the cap may rise slightly due to recent increases in wholesale gas prices.
