Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps Chief Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho announced that traffic conditions remain smooth as the annual Eid al-Fitr exodus, known locally as 'mudik,' begins ahead of the 2026 celebrations. According to official reports, approximately 28,000 vehicles have already departed from Jakarta as families prepare for the traditional homecoming journey.

The mudik tradition sees millions of Indonesians travel from major cities to their hometowns to celebrate Eid with extended family. This massive population movement typically puts enormous strain on the country's transportation infrastructure, making traffic management a critical concern for authorities.

Inspector General Suryonugroho's assessment comes as a relief to both travelers and officials who have been preparing for weeks to ensure safe passage during one of Indonesia's busiest travel periods. The smooth traffic flow suggests that advance planning and coordination efforts by various agencies are paying off.

Authorities continue to monitor key routes and have deployed additional personnel to manage the expected surge in travelers over the coming days. The successful management of early departure traffic bodes well for the remainder of the Eid travel season.
