Plans for a reboot of the iconic television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" have been officially scrapped at Hulu. The original series star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, confirmed the news in an Instagram post on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Gellar shared a photo of herself with the caption, "For some time now, there has been talk of a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. I am not sure how it got so far, but today I am announcing that Hulu has decided not to move forward with the project." The post effectively ended years of speculation about a modern revival of the supernatural drama.
The reboot was first reported to be in early development at Hulu in 2018, with the intent to feature a new Slayer and cast. The project faced numerous creative and production challenges over the years and never progressed to a formal green light for a pilot or series order.
No official reason for the cancellation was provided by Hulu. The streaming service and 20th Television, the studio behind the project, have not commented publicly on the decision. The original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," created by Joss Whedon, aired from 1997 to 2003 and remains a cult classic.
