The Kansas City Chiefs have acquired quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets, the teams announced. In exchange, the Jets will receive a conditional 2026 sixth-round draft pick. The pick can become a fifth-round selection based on Fields' playing time with the Chiefs.

The trade addresses a need for Kansas City, which sought a veteran backup with starting experience behind star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Fields, 27, started 38 games over three seasons for the Chicago Bears before being traded to the Jets in March 2025.

For the New York Jets, the move resolves a logjam at quarterback. The team had acquired Fields last offseason but also has Aaron Rodgers firmly entrenched as the starter. Trading Fields provides the Jets with additional draft capital.

Justin Fields now joins the reigning Super Bowl champions, where he is expected to serve as the primary backup. The trade is considered a low-risk, high-reward move for the Chiefs, adding a dynamic athlete to their quarterback room.
