Chelsea Football Club has been fined £8.6 million by the Premier League for historical breaches of its financial rules. The breaches relate to incomplete financial reporting made during the period of former owner Roman Abramovich's control of the club.
The Premier League stated that Chelsea self-reported the incomplete information concerning payments made to entities connected to former club director Marina Granovskaia and an agent involved in the transfer of Samuel Eto'o in 2014. The club's new ownership, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, discovered and proactively reported these historical issues after completing their takeover in 2022.
The league's investigation concluded that the club had breached rules requiring the provision of accurate financial information. In addition to the fine, Chelsea has entered into a standard 'Academy Player Compensation Settlement' with the league, agreeing to pay a further £1.5 million related to historical youth player registration irregularities.
The Premier League confirmed that the settlement brings the matter to a close, with no further action to be taken. The fine is not related to the club's current ownership or its recent financial activities under the Boehly-Clearlake consortium.
