The Big 12 Conference has confirmed it will use a traditional hardwood basketball court for the championship game of its men's basketball tournament, moving away from the experimental full-LED court used in earlier rounds. Commissioner Brett Yormark announced the decision, citing player feedback and the desire for a "traditional feel" for the final.
The innovative LED court, provided by ASB GlassFloor, was used during the first several rounds of the 2025 tournament at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. The technology allows for dynamic graphics and animations but drew criticism from some players and coaches who noted the surface felt different and potentially more slippery than standard hardwood.
Yormark stated that while the league is committed to innovation, the priority for the championship game is the competition itself. The switch back to a standard court addresses concerns over player safety and consistency. The hardwood floor for the final will be provided by Connor Sport Court International.
The decision highlights the ongoing balance in sports between technological advancement and maintaining the integrity of play. The Big 12 plans to continue evaluating the LED court technology for future regular-season events but will revert to a classic setup for its premier postseason matchup.
